Working with Ionising radiation sources
In order to be authorized to work with ionizing radiation sources at EPFL, all users must complete the following steps :
1) Register to the EPFL radiation protection database (accessible only on EPFL wi-fi or VPN)
2) Follow the basic training and pass the related quiz
3)In case an access to lab C is needed, follow the advanced training for controlled areas and pass the related quiz
If needed, you will be contacted by the Health point to undergo a medical examination according to the Radiological Protection Ordinance (RPO).
Coverage
The examination fees are covered by the unit and include:
- A blood test (full blood count) by the medical assistant
- A consultation (medical history & physical examination) with the occupational health specialist.
Case of Uranyl acetate and formate
Uranyl acetate and formate are extensively used as negative stains in electron microscopy. The possession of uranium-related products is however regulated by Federal ordinances and laws. This internal safety regulation is designed to protect your health and that of your colleagues.
The appendix provides examples that will also help you improve your work. Do not hesitate to ask for more information and to contact people experienced in this field.
In case of a radioactive substance spill
Leave the room immediately and post the Radioactive Spill Sign on the door (outside door of the lab).
